I was just catching up on some games websites, and seeing as I’m a ‘serious game academic’ these days rather than one of those fancy, jet-setting developer types, I naturally took a look to see what Gonzalo Frasca had to say:
Our job, either as AAA or non-AAA game developers, regardless of budgets, techniques and hours of gameplay, has nothing to do with fun. Our mission is to create compelling games that players deeply care about. The rest is mere entertainment.
I’m tempted to read this as an allegory of the day-to-day realities of life in the trenches, but that would be a little cynical, especially given my recent past (BTW: 5 1/2 months since doing any work … and counting! 🙂
